Narration of Exclamatory Sentences.
Rule : In case of exclamatory sentences, instead of the reporting verb, expressions like 'exclaimed', exclaimed with joy', exclaimed with sorrow', or exclaimed regretfully' are generally used according to the meaning of the expression given.
Examples:
Direct - He said, "What a surprising thing it is!"
Indirect - He exclaimed that it was a very surprising thing.
Direct - He said, "What a big building it is!"
Indirect - He exclaimed that it was a very big building.
Direct - He said, "How big the building is!"
Indirect - He exclaimed that the building was very big."
Direct - He said, "How excellent!"
Indirect - He exclaimed that it was very excellent.
Direct - He said, "How beautiful it is!"
Indirect - He exclaimed that it was very beautiful.
Direct - He said, "Hurrah! I have won."
Indirect - He exclaimed with joy that he had won.
Direct -- He said,"How selfish I have been!"
Indirect -- He regretfully exclaimed that he had been very selfish.
Direct. -- He said, “Alas! I am undone.”
Direct. -- Alice said, “How clever I am!”
Direct. -- He said, “Bravo! You have done well.”
Direct. -- “So help me, Heaven!” he cried, “I will never steal again.”
