Introduction to Narration

Narration refers to changing from direct speech to indirect speech and vice versa. Now what is direct speech? And what is indirect speech? Let us understand. 

Notice the following sentences:

i. John says to Meera, 'You are my friend'.
ii. John tells Meera that she is her friend. 

In the first sentence the exact words of  teachers are told. But in the second sentence, the exact words of the speaker is not told. So the first sentence here is direct speech and the second sentence is indirect speech.

Narration of Excla ma tory  Sentences. Rule : In case of exclamatory sentences, instead of the reporting verb, expressions like 'exclaimed', exclaimed with joy', exclaimed with sorrow', or exclaimed regretfully' are generally used according to the meaning of the expression given.
