Introduction to Narration Narration refers to changing from direct speech to indirect speech and vice versa. Now what is direct speech? And what is indirect speech? Let us understand.  Notice the following sentences: i. John says to Meera, 'You are my friend'. ii. John tells Meera that she is her friend.  In the first sentence the exact words of  teachers are told. But in the second sentence, the exact words of the speaker is not told. So the first sentence here is direct speech and the second sentence is indirect speech. Next

Narration of Assertiv e Sentences A.  Changing from direct speech to indirect speech.   Rule :  Remove comma and inverted comma and use 'that':   Example Direct : He says, 'A dog is barking' Indirect :  He says that a dog is barking.   Try these 1: 1. Narration of Interrogative  Sentences Rules: I) 'asked' or ' inquired  of'  will be used instead of 'Reporting Verb'. Narration of Imperative Sentences Rule : Use of 'command' or 'order'  in case of order by authoritorial persons to subordinates, like 'teacher to student', 'guardian to ward', or 'officer to subordinate'. Rule : In case of exclamatory sentences, instead of the reporting verb, expressions like 'exclaimed', exclaimed with joy', exclaimed with sorrow', or exclaimed regretfully' are generally used according to the meaning of the expression given.
